Screen Printing

Screen Printing

I first was introduced to the idea of screenprint in about 1985, when I was lucky enough to be invited to various openings at the Glasgow Print Studio by one of my dad’s students/ family friends.  Her husband was partly involved at the time, and as I was really into art, they’d bring me along for the art , and the craic.

It’s not hard to imagine the impression that the whole scene left on a 15 yr old.  The pictures, the ambience, the conversations, and the free wine … exciting!!!  And there was even people smoking hashish in the stairwell!! Wow… a bohemian reverie!!

So my interest was peaked, and i spoke to my tutors, both at school and at my Saturday Community Class, about the preparations etc… I was already making line-drawings that were good for it, and so was helped through the process by Mrs Matherson, my School Art Teacher *

Unfortunately, I don’t have any of the work that I made at that period, and there are only a few bits and pieces left with my dad.

Anyway,  my initiation into screen-print was somewhat cursory at the time, and i have subsequently learned myself over the years both the use of the physical side, i.e. screens and exposures and inks, but also the creation of deadicated separated artworks for making multi-layered prints.

I find the whole process of print-making really interesting, and enjoy the focused nature of the work , as well as the final results…. all in all, a thoroughly absorbing and satisfying media to engage with.

Bearsden Academy, and Mrs Matherson

In 1985, in my 3nd year at Bearsden Academy, I sustained a neck injury during rugby practice which left me wearing a full neck brace for around 6 mths.  I was jubilent that i no longer had to attend sports, and found out that during the same timetable period as my class year had P.E., that the 6th Yr Studies/’A’Level students had 4 hours in the art department with no other students.  There were only 7 people doing S.Y.S. Art that year and i was allowed to just sit in, as it were, as an non-examined student.   Subsequently, I spent the same periods over the nexr 3 yrs being tutored in a framework of “étudient libre”, without the pressure of folio preparation and examination.

Mrs Matherson, who had been my teacher in 1st and 2nd year, kind of took me under her wing, always finding me interesting and explorative projects to while away the hours.  In a lot of ways, it was this respite for the rest of my school time that gave me a breath of fresh air, and the place to explore my creative urges without constraint… I look back so fondly on those hour in the art room, whether doing some still life, or some pottery, or learning elements of dark-room practice, and making silk-screens with stencils… it certainly helped to sooth the otherwise unpleasant experience of being in the school.

Other Experiences

Over the years, I’ve worked as a Chef, an Archeologist, a Builder and a Yurt Maker.

Making Yurts has probably been one of my best things to do, as it has encompassed design, and woodworking and a host of other skills. https://dessinemoiuneyourte.com

“May the soft rains fall, and nurture;
May the warm earth hold the dream;
May the sun shine down with radiance;
May the stars light your way in the dark.
May the seed grow strong for tomorrow;
May the flower give joy to your soul;
May the patterns unfold, unhindered;
May you always be coming home.”
